A member asked:

I've had right-side/sternum chest discomfort for the past three days after a panic attack. i can't tell if it gets worse with movement, it's just a dull ache that makes me anxious which leads to my heart pounding. nerves or possible costochondritis?

Most likely a non-cardiac cause such as costochondritis ,but a diagnosis can only be made after evaluation by a physician. Reassurance by a physician will go a long way to providing reassurance. I hope you will pursue this approach. Good luck.

It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water. Wish you good health!

I agree that your chest distress is of musculoskeletal origin. I assume there has been no recent rib cage strain or injury. Tenderness at the junction of the rib & sternum is characteristic of costochondritis. Do you see a mental health professional to help you manage your panic attacks.or any chronic stress& anxiety? If chest distress persists see your physician for evaluation & advice.
