A member asked:

Hemoglobin 10.3, hematocrit 31.8, mch 26.4, ferritin 4. currently 33 weeks pregnant, levels have been the same for the past 8 weeks. is it dangerous for baby & me? scared he wont be ok because of it. was told to take 325mg of iron a day, is that ok?

While hct and hgb are low, as is your ferritin level, this degree of anemia should not influence fetal well being. Oral iron and an increase in meat and leafy green vegetables will replenish iron stores.

Neither you nor your baby is at risk. However, it would be prudent to correct your iron deficiency. If you are unable to tolerate oral iron, ask you doctor to give you an intravenous infusion and your deficiency could be corrected in one sitting. Wish you good health and a healthy baby!
