Just had gall bladder surgery ( laparoscopic) .. why am i being prescribed gabapentin? is this medicine pain killer ?

Your question is correct. This medication should NOT be used for an acute, postoperative pain. We only use Gabapentin at times for people who have post cholecystectomy syndrome, a chronic condition which has some feature of neuropathic pain.

Best is to ask the prescriber. Always ask the prescriber the reason, dose and possible side effects of medicine prescribed. Yes it could be used as a pain medicine.

Gabapentin is indicated for nerve pain and epilepsy, not for post operative management unless surgery damaged a nerve!!
