Can anesthesia send autism into a regression?

From the medical literature, there does not seem to be a direct cause and effect with the anesthesia per se. But there does appear to be significant emotional turmoil post-operatively, if staff does not take special care to deal with an autistic individual's specific needs. All this needs to be planned pre-operatively to create a smooth and safe transition.
