A member asked:

Female 38,gp given omeprazole 20mg taken am &pm for 1mth now for pain after eating, suspected gastritis but no red flags .i have a little jelly mucus with dry pellets of poo could it be the ppi ?i do suffer from constipation and take laxido?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

I wouldn't attribute the mucus to a ppi. Mucus in stool is not unusual in people with irritable bowel symptoms who take laxatives. However ppi's can affect BM's causing both diarrhea and/ or constipation. Either way small amounts of mucus in stools aren't serious but large amounts can be a sign of bowel pathology.
