Hello doctors. can people who are on dialysis still have any type of freedom/independence? are they able to visit family? are they able to travel and sightsee and take bus tours and cruises? how often dopeople who require dialysis need to receive it?

2 ways to do dialysis - peritoneal dialysis (usually done at home, every night) and hemodialysis (usually done in a dialysis center and usually 3 times a week). With peritoneal dialysis you do not need a center to go to, so you can say you are more independent. On hemodialysis usually people make arrangements ahead of time if they need to travel, in order to go to a different center temporarily.

If you like travel, peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the modality you should choose. Usually, you will bring your own machine with you (the machine is smaller than a small size microwave) and the dialysis company will deliver the rest (a big bulk of supply) to the hotel or where you stay. Some big cruise ship companies offer dialysis treatment, either hemo or PD. PD should be done every night.
