It is not safe for long term use unless it is absolutely indicated, e.g. severe GERD can't be controlled with histamine 2 antagonist such as famotidine or cimedidine. For whatever the condition you take, if symptoms resolve, stop the medication, no need to taper the dose. If symptoms recur you can try famotidine or cimetidine first before reserving to Omeprazole and take it as needed only.

Relatively safe for use in the short to medium term and for as long as there is a clear long term plan under the care of your prescriber. More and more long term side effects are being recognized otherwise and this is where plan B becomes important.
