A heart monitor (holter) detects only heart arrhythmias. They do not measure breathing rate or stoppages. If a person suspects that they have sleep apnea, a sleep study should be done to confirm this. During the sleep study, respiration rate, heart rate, oxygenation and many other vital signs are recorded to evaluate for breathing stoppages and their effects on heart, brain, etc.
