Hemoptysis or coughing up blood has to be assessed timely, your recent history and an exam will be needed as well as most likely imaging studies. An urgent care or local emergency department would be best as work up might take too long as outpatient. Informing your primary care doc should help as well as he or she may be able to coordinate locally.

Please see your physician right away, and if you have any respiratory difficulty or if the condition worsens, acute care is available. An imaging study and examination, and identification of the source of bleeding are important. One cause may be related to infection, but other causes include non pulmonary bleeding, e.g. a GI bleed, nasal bleeding or a bleeding disorder.

Agree with Drs. P and D. Any abnormal bleeding needs an evaluation. Coughing up blood warrants exclusion of many serious disorders, e.g. pulmonary embolism, tuberculosis, lung cancer, inflammation of the blood vessels in the lung etc. It is imperative that you see a doctor. Wish you good health!
