In general constipation responds to life style changes, including dietary adjustments, proper hydration and regular physical exercise. Other types are refractory and medical attention may be needed in trying to rule out medical conditions that might need to be addressed. Laxatives may be needed and best to use if so recommended by your medical professional.

No. What you described is not laxative abuse. For constipation - You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods.
