A member asked:

I'm having my root canal next weekend on a top premolar but it's not due to infection. a filling is causing irritated or inflammation of the nerve. is that less serious then an infection? could a inflamed nerve turn into a infection? just curious?

The filling is deep and close to the nerve[pulp] ,causing pain and discomfort. If untreated this will lead to the death of the nerve and an infection. You will than have to be placed on an antibiotic and lose the tooth if you don't get a root canal. The root canal is the proper treatment.

The nerve irritation is not likely to turn to infection however the mouth has lots of bacteria and the inflammation could actually be a manifestation of infection as well. The filling makes it easy for the bacteria to hide and be protected from inflammatory cells and may increase chances of infection but not by turning to infection.

Nerve sensitivity due to the original bacterial infection. Tooth may require root canal treatment. Ask Dentist to do vitality testing, or referral to an Endodontist for evaluation.
