My father had been experiencing mild to moderate on and off pain in his upper abdomen for months, although his recent ct scan with contrast and ultrasound last 2 weeks ago is clear or insignificant. what could be causing the pain?

Such pain proves to be musculoskeletal sometimes. Functional disorders are also always possible and they are not captured on imaging. Keeping a log of symptoms with circumstances, predisposing and alleviating factors will help his primary care doc in deciding what the next best step will be.
