A member asked:

I am experiencing flushing. is it common for 5hiaa to be mildly elevated? if so, what causes this? if my ct scan and ultrasound of the liver is normal, what is the chances of carcinoid syndrome from a midgut carcinoid tumor?

Distal metastasis.: Usually carcinoid tumors cause more syndromal symptoms than just flushing in the late stage. (Diarrhea, weight loss, etc. should occur). 5-HIAA is a metabolite (breakdown product) of serotonin; but also of tryptophan (protein found in foods) - the levels are unreliable for diagnosis but OK as a screening tool. Chromogranin-A = confirmatory test. Use HealthTap Prime to discuss- this is complicated!
