What is the best time for doing an iui in terms of hours before or after ovulation?

If ovulation is documented by an "ovulation test", which measures a hormone produced just prior to ovulation, IUI can be attempted 2-4 days after a positive test. At age 40, pregnancy rates are significantly reduced, so a sperm analysis, and other testing (FSH level) may predict likelihood of conception. If not successful, other testing HSG (hysterosalpingogram) may be necessary.

Doing an IUI this month, so I wanted to start ovulation testing early not to miss the time. I had a high surge of LH (almost peak) on day 4 of the cycle. Never ovulated that early before. Following days it was low. What could cause such early surge?
