Herpes simplex causes most "cold sores" on the lips, and the term "herpes" refers to a family of viruses, notably simplex and zoster and their subtypes.

There are two kinds of mouth/lip sores: Canker sores occur in the mouth, lips, throat or tongue and can be caused by a variety of triggers, dental work, vigorous brushing or sharp food, products containing sodium lauryl sulfate, acidic foods, diet lacking in vit B12, zinc, folate or iron, stress, hormone fluctuations. Cold sores occur primarily on lips and are caused by the herpes virus.
