A member asked:

If you got a cold/cough going on without a fever does it mean your immune system is down? are you more susceptible and prone to getting the herpes virus from someone who has it orally? from cheek kisses?? thanks?

There are no single specific symptoms that reflect a reduce immune response, but if your recovery seems slow make sure you are eating properly and getting plenty of rest. Oral herpes is not more infectious but oral to oral transmission is more likely. Cheek kisses will not do it.

Whether or not you have fever with a cold has nothing to do with the strength of your immune system. If anything, lack of fever might mean your immune system is responding especially well. In any case, there are few if any immune system problems that raise the risk of herpes if exposed. Social kissing (peck on the cheek, for example) rarely if ever transmits herpes. No need for worry!
