Sometimes we refer to the hip as the joint that allows you to pick up your leg in 3 directions, and sometimes you notice a dip when you take a step which comes from a pelvic joint in back of your hip ( the sacroiliac joint). An osteopathic physician or musculoskeletal physician can examine this to answer your exercise questions, or what you call "straining" . Don't worry, get checked.
