To recover from metabolic acidosis due to acetazolamide your body (mainly kidneys) needs several days for self correcting the abnormal acid-base and electrolyte imbalance after the medication is cleared from your body. You can hasten the recovery by drinking Polycitra (OTC) 2 tablespoons, three times a day for a couple days.

I'd be surprised if longterm acetezolamide, in the absence of significant vomiting & diarrhea, was a cause of metabolic acidosis. Many patients take it longterm for glaucoma treatment but we do recommend periodic check of electrolytes, bun & creatinine in these patients.
