Acidosis: With severe diarrhea, metabolic acidosis is frequent and can result in severe complications depending on extent and duration of the diarrhea as well as the degree of rehydration. The acidosis results from loss of K+ and bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) from excess liquid stool . The blood pH is normally maintained at 7.4. Below 7.35, metabolic acidosis is present.
