A member asked:

Can a normal sized lymph node in the neck be visible as a small bump when moving head and neck certain positions? especially in a very thin person? or would it more likely be a bump from a vein similar to what can be seen from the back of a hand?

Lymph nodes are located throughout the body & generally noticeable in exposed areas like the neck where they are not hidden by fat or tissues. They are usually pea sized at rest and enlarged when stimulated by bug bites, dermatitis, drainage or infection. They rarely can become damaged by infection & grow to golf ball size & need drainage or removal.

Yes, a variety of structures may surface at the neck level. Location, consistency and appearance help in delineating their actual origin.

Yes, as they are present in everyone in the neck, they can certainly be seen and be more visible with the head or neck in certain positions, even when a normal size, or if they are enlarged. If the lymph node becomes larger, painful, red or a fever develops, please have it checked by a doctor.
