86 year male got into vocal chord paralysis. doctor in hospital considering tracheostomy as a final option if steroids dont work. his oxygen is over 95 with oxygen on. is that procedure still necessary? can he eat and talk normally after procedure ?

obviously, I can't answer specifically without knowing more about the situation. However, in general, paralyzed vocal cords would block the airway without a tracheostomy. They would block the trachea. The tracheostomy provides an opening so oxygen can get in. Most people can eat without issue. Many people can talk by covering the tracheostomy temporarily, but his vocal cords are paralyzed ?
