86 yr old male damage to the mucosa of larynx post extubation resulting in coughing up blood. ct of chest and throat and endoscopy came negative. considering old age how long may it take for this laryngeal endema to heal and stop bleeding with cough?

Hello. It’s time for an ENT evaluation to assure there isn’t any other reason for your symptoms. Certainly the intubation and the tube being in place can cause irritation causing bleeding but it’s not typical. An endoscopy, imaging and treatment can be helpful to resolve these issues. Once the reason is clearly established a better idea of healing expectations can be shared. Good luck.

It may take days to weeks depending on the severity of the injury. If only bleeding with cough, then should try to control the cough as much as possible--if taking "blood thinner" then bleeding maybe more severe. If significant laryngeal edema occurs, consult doc for possible short course of steroid etc...Anyhow, control the cough as much as possible--OTC or prescription meds. Good luck
