A member asked:

Lesion on tongue removed, initial diagnosis polyp from trauma. pathology result squamous papilloma. advised benign, no follow up,usually caused by hpv virus. does this mean i have the virus & it wasn't trauma? i have not been sexually active for yrs?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

HPV is the likely cause of the squamous papilloma. Although HPV is very contagious, some of the genetic sub-types are slow growing and may have co-existed "for years" without achieving a size where obvious, and biopsy is necessary.
