Both types of Pnumonia vaccine are needed. They cover different strains. You need to take Prevnar 13 first and one year later, you need to take Pneumovax 23. You only need to do this once after ager 65. This will protect you against bacterial Pneumonia.

They both are considered equally effective but if the 70 year old has had the Pneumovax before then the other vaccine would be appropriate. Good Luck
