A rabies exposure occurs when the saliva from a rabid animal gets into an open wound on the skin of a human. This is primarily through bites. Rabies is very sensitive to air and will die almost immediately upon contact with air. Therefore, having any rabid animal just scratch you cannot transmit rabies unless they then also licked or bit you.
