A member asked:

On a recent routine metabolic panel i had low potassium. never have been low. went a week later was even lower. dr put me on potassium chloride twice daily. do i need to see an endocrinologist to see if there is an underlying issue?

If you can't attribute the significant hypokalemia to taking a diuretic or losing potassium from diarrhea, kidney disease or excessive alcohol use, then an endocrinologist or a nephrologist should be consulted. Hyperaldosteronism ,which is a cause of hypertension, is a possibility.
