Ingrown toenails can put one at risk for an infection called paronychia. If no redness or drainage, likely no infection is present. The best intervention is to soak the foot at least twice a day for 10 minutes in warm water (as warm as tolerated without burning) with an antibacterial soap. Applying antibiotic ointment on the area could also be helpful as well as gently trying to release the nail.

You're correct in that a podiatrist is best to treat your ingrown toenail. In the meantime apply hot wet compresses for 15 minutes a few times a day. Pat dry. You could apply an antibacterial ointment to prevent infection . Keep pressure off the toe with comfortable footwear. Wear white cotton socks. Put lambs wool between the 2 toes.
