Constipation can present with infrequent, difficult, or incomplete bowel movements. It can be an occasional occurrence or a chronic problem. Red flag symptoms are fever, chills, persistent and severe abdominal pain, blood in stools, vomiting, unexplained weight loss. All these as well as any persistent change in bowel habits need to be investigated.
