It does sound as desperate measures, suggesting liver failure. Talk to the docs involved regarding goals of care at this point as functional recovery becomes less and less likely. Palliative care may be needed and the inpatient team may help in timely and efficient communication between family and the medical team.

Agree with Dr Pasniciuc, as indeed the picture is quite dire. Critical at this point, besides hepatic deterioration would be secondary status of heart and brain. Regarding the latter, an EEG might objectify current functional reserve. In these kinds of situations, have found that periodic meetings involving family and ICU team can clarify status, and encourage scheduling such an event.
