Swelling and pain in top of foot, accompanied by pain, stiffness, and weakness in the knee? ortho says it sounds like a compressed nerve, but could it be a partial tear of meniscus or lcl? no mri yet and hurts to wear any shoe?

You should wait for MRI done. In the meantime, you can use Ibuprofen/Motrin/Advil OTC 200 mg x 2 tablets with foods every 6 hours as needed for pain. Remember use as needed only not around the clock.

To sort out, obtain MRI of knee, and to evaluate "compressed nerve" get EMG/ NCS of the entire leg.
