See details: Swelling is the result on inflammation usually secondary to arthritis and less frequently to a tear. A meniscal cyst is just what the term describes.

Meniscal tears: Pain and swelling are very common symptoms of a meniscal tear. If it has been going on for more than a month i would see an orthopedic surgeon to get x-rays and probably an mri. Meniscal tears typically don't heal and require arthroscopic surgery to fix them.
