A member asked:

In regard to hiv, do p24 protein levels decrease regardless of antibody response or is it specifically antibody-antigen complexing in the blood that causes p24 levels to become undetectable?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

P24 antigen is a structural protein of the HIV virus (part of the external “wall” of the virus). Is present early after infection, but gradually declines and ultimately disappears as HIV antibodies build up and block detection of the antigen. Is therefore part of 4th generation HIV test (the test becomes (+) very soon after exposure due to P24 antigen) and stays (+) later due to HIV antibody
