A member asked:

Someone i know pulled a muscle in his shoulder, put a heating pad on it for i think he said all night, and got a staph infection in it. he was an older person. is this typical for anyone, how long is too long?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

While health professionals have no specific rules governing how long you should use a heating pad, many tend to recommend using one for about 15 to 30 minutes. After that the skin can no longer truly register the temp and can get burned. Additionally there is no added benefit to the muscle. With aging, subq fat is lost & can result in an easier burn. Best results are on 15 min, off 15, repeat.
