A member asked:

What are there contraversies with statins ?are they safe over a long period.is lipitor at 10mg a low or potent dose?

Generally safe. The most common adverse effects are muscle pain, abnormal liver enzymes etc. Some have described neurocognitive problems but these are not well documented. Nevertheless when balanced against the risks of hyperlipidemia, statins are safe and well tolerated.

In general safe and well tolerated. Lipitor or atorvastatin at 10 mg is a low, approach dose. All treatment decisions should include clear shared goals with benefits, risks and alternatives covered and agreed upon.

These medications are safe over long term. You should supplement your lipid control with diet and exercise. For healthy diet: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/., exercise 30 minutes/day, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. Wish you good health!
