If i have atypical pneumonia, well i need a steroid to help my lungs or just an antibiotic? this is what i have been told i might haveexcessive mucus in throat, chest heaviness, and slight cough that is sometimes dry and sometimes productive.

Atypical pneumonia is caused by uncommon (not typical) bacteria and antibiotic is also used. Sometimes, doctor adds steroid for alleviating the significant inflammation such as excessive secretion or wheezing, etc.

An atypical pneumonia may be treated with an antibiotic if the underlying cause is bacterial. The macrolides have anti inflammatory properties, but if there is significant inflammation, a steroid may be added. If there is improvement the steroid may be stopped after 3-5 days. A respiratory panel including COVID 19 screening may be sent if there is no improvement.
