Sounds like you have developed an overuse injury from your running. You did the right thing by resting it in allowing it to heal however the cause of it has not been established. Because it’s probably biomechanical In nature. The cause could be as simple as your shoes, the surface you run on, or the biomechanical structure of your body and function.
