An x-ray will reveal bone normality or damge, but an MRI will show detail of the soft tissues and greatly enhance the amount of information that the doctors can glean about what is causing the pain. So the short answer is that an x-ray is not good enough these days.

As indicated, the MRI is now the "gold standard" and will reveal the most detail. Your doctor's exam is the place to start, and a decision for testing can be based upon your exam findings.
