He can tell by looking because of over 10,000 hours of training and years of experience. Beats a google search any day, but look up circumvallate papillae. Gingivitis caused by bacteria. Diabetes doesn't cause gum disease, but does make oral environment more conducive to the disease. Try flossing daily.
