Asking on behalf female thai ethnicity 37yrs old.has thalassemia trait, heavy periods, slight hair loss,gp explained in her blood test result is fine as it is low 'in'range at 12ug/l range is 12.00-250ugl.gp does not agree with iron treatment.why?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

"Thalassemia trait" may be associated with mild anemia (tired, weakness, shortness of breath with exercise), and depends on the type of hemoglobin inherited from one parent. Iron stores should be monitored, as opportunities for red cell production can reduce symptoms, but vigorous iron treatment without utilization of the iron can also cause clinical problems.
