Severe Chronic Eczema is considered an Autoimmune Disorder. Your immune system somehow misreads your normal skin and components as foreign and attacks them, causing inflammation, redness and peeling scaly itchy skin. Treatment is aimed at reducing the immune response with various topical or oral steroids or immune suppressants. Mild eczema is more easily treated.
