Talk to the people he respects and trusts the most, such as parents, siblings, friends, his GP. He definitely needs help as massive medical and legal complications may arise. Many times significant medical conditions, such as depression or severe anxiety disorder are at the root and recognizing and addressing them will be critical in the process.

This is an ages old problem & one which can not be answered in 400 characters or less. I strongly encourage you to become involved in ALANON which is a 12 step program for people whose lives are entwined with an alcoholic. However please be aware that this will not give you a majic path to change another.
