Placental Abruption has a variety of causes: Chronic High Blood Pressure, a fall or blow to the abdomen, smoking, cocaine use during pregnancy, early rupture of membranes, infection in the uterus. It is more common in women who are over 40 and who have had a previous placental abruption. The rate of PA in any pregnancy is 1%. Presence of factors named above increase the risk.
