Ear piercing holes can become infected if used infrequently and extra force or abrasion occurs when putting in the earring for the first time. If the area around the hole is red, hot or swollen, these are all signs of infection. If there are none of these signs, the green crud could have been just some waxy buildup or accumulated debris.
