Red not normal: Red and swollen is not normal. It is a sign of inflammation and possibly infection. As far as to whether you use a regular earring or a bar, it depends on what you want in the end. If you are only going to be putting regular earrings in, this will be fine to use for your initial piercing. If you plan to use thicker jewelry, you would need a bar.
