A severe allergic reaction in an emergency room is frequently treated with an antihistamine, usually Benadryl at 50 mg per dose with follow up prescription for prednisone which will cover any recurrent allergic symptoms for approximately 4-5 days. This is a safe way of covering not only the urgent reaction but also any follow on reactions that could occur.
