Blood in mucus: Flecks of blood in mucus can simply be due to irritation of trachea from harsh coughing. If there is accompanying discolored sputum , a tracheobronchial infection is likely. Persistent coughing up of blood would warrant an evaluation with chest x-ray and/or chest CT scan and/or consultation with a pulmonologist. If no further blood, I would just sit tight for now.
