My 47 year old niece is severely retarded and suffers from pronounced "s" curve spinal scoliosis, which has caused a hiatal hernia and i suspect frequent heart burn. what could she be given (foods/meds) on a daily basis to make her more comfortable?

Hiatal hernia: Hiatal hernia comes with incompetant valve at the top of stomach. Yes, can relate to mechanical problems (scoliosis.) Recommend small frequent meals, avoid CAPAS: caffiene, aspirin, pepper, alcohol, spices. Over the counter meds like Pepcid Complete & TUMS can help. Elevating head of bed at night recommended. Prob needs endoscopy to see if inflammation in esophagus: Done by Gastroenterologist.
