A member asked:

So if i take a hiv 4 generation combo test at 4 months after exposure (unprotected vaginal sex) will it miss the p24 antigen at this point and if so will pick up the antibodies. is it possible both will be absent at 4 months. why 6 months wait?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

4th gen neg = neg: 4th generation tests are extremely accurate. “Official” recommendation is to wait 6 months (based on older, less sensitive tests - will probably update eventually). If 4th generation is negative a 4 months, you are negative and do not have HIV.
