A member asked:

Can i use chloramphenicol eye ointment to treat a cold sore on the lips instead of aciclovir? will it help with the cold sore? or is there maybe something more effective than both of these ointments?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not Chloramphenicol : Cold sore usually from herpes virus, chloramphenicol only treats bacterial infection. The ointment may provide relief from dryness but will not help cold sore. Acyclovir is the way to go, as well as boosting immunity with liquids, rest, and supplements as needed to prevent recurrence and promote faster healing.
