A member asked:

Hi doctors. if a male has a prolactinoma, how high would prolactin levels usually be? i read that the upper limit for men is 20--mine is 22.2. are medications effective in treating prolactinomas, or is surgery usually necessary?

Higher: In males with prolactinoma the levels are usually greater than 150ng/ml. Your level is probably within the margin of error for the test or could be due to multiple other causes of prolactin elevation like Stress, exercise, low blood sugar, low thyroid function, medications, or liver or kidney problems. Work with endocrinologist to pinpoint the cause.

Usually meds. : Since values are low, I would consider your symptoms. Surgery may be necessary if you do not respond to med treatment.
